The primary school at École Vinet: building a strong foundation for learning

At École Vinet, 7th and 8th grade classes represent a key stage in students’ educational journey. As a private school in Vaud, we offer teaching in line with the Romand Curriculum (Plan d’études romand), within a structured, supportive, and small-scale environment that allows careful attention to each child.
These two years play a crucial role in consolidating fundamental skills, particularly in French and mathematics, while also developing essential abilities such as curiosity, autonomy, work organization, and self-confidence. They gradually prepare students for the demands of secondary education, both academically and personally.
At Vinet, we place particular emphasis on balancing knowledge and personal development. Individualized support, close collaboration with families, and attention to each student’s pace create a reassuring and stimulating environment, laying a solid foundation for their future studies.
At the end of 8th grade, orientation to 9VP or 9VG occurs without cantonal exams (ECR), reducing stress for students and families. We consider the full year’s performance, including results, potential, curiosity, and motivation, with access to 9VP granted from an average  report card score of 4.5.

Teaching approach

A teaching approach that respects each student’s individual pace

Entering 7th grade marks a new stage: learning becomes more structured and progressive while remaining adapted to each student’s age and pace. Students gain autonomy and learn to organize and manage their work.

Comprehensive and dynamic teaching

Throughout the year, workshops, creative activities, and educational outings allow students to apply their learning in concrete and engaging ways.

Varied pedagogical approaches

A range of methods (games, experimentation, hands-on activities, collaborative workshops, or Montessori-style approaches) foster curiosity, autonomy, and a love of learning.

Individualized support

Each student receives personalized guidance to develop work methods, organization, and autonomy, with part of the homework completed in class

Advantages

Programme

The 7th and 8th grade programme is based on a balanced curriculum between core subjects and supplementary subjects.

Core Subjects

In French, mathematics, and German, students are taught in separate levels (7th and 8th grade), allowing for focused and tailored instruction for each class.

Secondary Subjects

English, natural sciences, history, geography, physical education, music, and visual arts. Students from 7th and 8th grades are grouped together, encouraging interaction, mutual support, and a stimulating group dynamic.

Workshops

Each week, a workshop in each core subject offers an alternative way of learning through games or hands-on activities, enhancing understanding, motivation, and engagement.

Reading and Exploration

A dedicated period to spark students’ curiosity through books, exploration of diverse topics, and artistic or creative projects.

“Outdoor learning” Class

Students leave the classroom to learn differently: nature, parks, or exhibitions become spaces of discovery, fostering curiosity, interdisciplinary learning, and a sense of purpose in their studies.

Methodology

Learning to organize, develop strategies for more effective learning, and become autonomous.

An Ideal Environment for Success

A solid and stimulating program, combined with attentive guidance and a motivating environment, fully supports academic achievement.

and after?

After 8th grade: heading toward 9VP or 9VG secondary school

École Vinet supports each student in learning with enjoyment, building confidence, and fully developing their potential. Students then continue their journey in secondary school, either in 9VP (Gymnase track) or 9VG (general education track). Orientation is based on the entire school year and takes into account not only academic results but also the student’s potential, curiosity, and engagement. Access to 9VP is possible from an average grade of 4.5, and VG-to-VP changes can be considered in 9th grade depending on the student’s results and motivation.

Small class sizes allow students to have truly meaningful interactions and learning experiences. The closeness between teachers and students is quite exceptional. Not to mention the excellent head of the school, Mrs. Kaba, who is very present for each student. Our daughter entered 10th grade, has just obtained her 11th-grade certificate, and is entering gymnasium to pursue her Matura. The school has supported her very well since her arrival from France, where the system is different.
